John Turner was a late comer to Brass. Having started his musical education at Wells Cathedral school as a keyboard player he didn’t pick up his first brass instrument till the age of 21. After over 10 years learning in the local banding community he joined Wells City Band in 2015 as a Tenor Horn Player. He couldn’t keep his talents and experience hidden long and was soon promoted to the position of Solo Horn later that year.
With years of experience as MD of Moorlight Theatre company, local youth bands and working in schools, John was the obvious choice to step into the role of assistant conductor and Intermediate Section MD when the post became vacant.
Drawing on the great work of Tanya Climo and her training section team, Johns’ key role is to take players through their paces, equipping them with the skills and experience needed before integrating them into the main band.
John shares the conducting of the main band with Dot Poole, allowing the band to benefit from both of their conducting and playing talents.
